The prints depict scenes from Ban Sai Thong (บ้านทรายทอง / Golden Sand House), a Thai novel turned-soap opera written by Ko Surangkhanang, in which the camera takes on the perspective of an unseen presence within the house—observing the characters from a hidden, almost ghost-like vantage point. First published as a serial in Piyamit magazine in 1950, Ban Sai Thong became one of the most popular novels of the time. The novel has been adapted into four plays, six television soap operas, and two films. The version shown here is the 1987 television adaptation, which aired on Bangkok Broadcasting & Television Company Limited Channel 7.
The prints are part of the artist’s ongoing exploration of Ban Sai Thong and its many reproductions over the decades, with the house consistently remaining central to the narrative. The artist is particularly interested in how the story’s enduring presence has both mirrored and haunted Thai society, revealing its complex relationship with the image of the house and the dynamics of social class.
